먼저 adapt/adopt를 설명하고 마지막에 adept를 소개한다. adapt는 어원적으로 ad(toward, become)-apt(fitted)의 의미결합으로 어원적으로는 잘 들어맞는다. 사실 요즈음의 의미인 도 어원과 매우 밀접한 관련이 있다. 반면에 adopt는 ad(toward, become)-opt(choose, see)의 결합으로 는 의미이다. 미국영어의 발음으로는 adapt는 [?d?pt], adopt는 [?d?pt]로 발음상으로도 차이가 난다.

이 둘은 사실 형태소를 분석해 보면 혼동의 여지가 거의 없다. 먼저 adapt에서 보이는 apt는 실제 단어로서 be apt to, an apt reply, an apt student 등에서 실제 볼 수 있다. 또한 aptitude (적성)같은 단어에서도 나타난다.

a) She is apt to take offense easily.

b) Tom amused the teacher with an apt reply.

c) An apt student is a clever man who reasons well and whose wit is bold.

apt는 누가 뭐래도 be apt to의 형태로 가장 많이 쓰인다. 뜻은 는 말로 (a)에서는 쉽게 화를 낸다는 말이며 an apt reply는 또는 이고 an apt student는 쉽게 배우는 학생 즉 이 된다.

이러한 apt의 의미에 비추어 볼 때, adapt는 상황에 적절하게 어울리거나, 영리하게 대처하는 것이므로 는 기본적인 의미에서 는 등의 오늘 날의 의미를 찾아 내는 것이 어렵지 않을 것이다.

d) She always adapted easily to new circumstances.

e) He has adapted the play for television.

f) Can't you adapt yourself to my way of doing things?

먼저 (d)에서는 적응한다>는 의미를 그리고 (e)는 각색했다> 그리고 (f)에서는 는 의미를 찾아 볼 수 있다. 여기서 adapt뒤에는 주로 to라는 전치사가 사용됨에 유의하자.

adopt에서 보이는 opt역시 실제로 쓰이는 동사로 He opted for an early retirement에서 보듯 의 의미가 있다. 어원적으로 opt는 즉 눈에 관련된 형태소로 이러한 형태소가 들어가 있는 말로는 optometrist(시력측정가), optical lens(광학렌즈) 등이 있는데 눈으로 본다는 뜻에서 는 의미로 확대되어 option (선택권) 나아가 optimal (최적의)라는 단어를 만들어 내기도 한다. 여기서의 target word은 adopt는 는 의미가 더해져서 가장 흔하게는 는 뜻과 이러한 의미가 확대되어 등의 의미가 나타난다. 다음의 예를 보자.

g) Since they had no children of their own they decided to adopt a little girl.

h) After going to France he adopted the French way of life.

i) The company decided to adopt a new technique.

j) She enjoys living in her adopted country.

(g)는 바로 첫 번째 의미인 는 말. 하지만 이 뜻이 확대되어 이론이나 기술 또는 삶의 방식을 받아들인다는 뜻으로 쓰인다. (h)는 프랑스식 삶을 영위했다는 말이고, (i)는 새로운 기술을 도입했다는 것이고 (j)는 자기가 택한 나라 즉 새로 이민간 나라에서의 삶을 즐긴다는 의미다.

이렇듯 adapt와 adopt는 생김새는 비슷하지만 사실상 의미는 확연히 다름을 알 수 있다. 구지 둘을 연결 지어 말한다면 위의 (f) 문장 Can’t you adapt yourself to my way of doing things?을 adopt를 써서 Can’t you adopt my way of doing things? 로 쓸 수는 있을 것이지만 역시 문법적으로도 쓰임새가 다름을 알 수 있다. 명사형은 확연히 차이가 나서 adaptation과 adoption은 분명히 달리 보일 것이다.

마지막으로 adept라는 단어를 보자. 어원적으로 apt와 관련이 있다는 설명도 있지만 adept는 동사로 쓰이지 않고 오직 형용사 (또는 형용사에서 전성된 명사)로만 사용된다. 그 뜻은 는 말로 proficient, skillful, expert 등의 동의어로 대체하여 사용할 수 있을 것이다.

k) He's very adept at keeping his balance.

l) She's very adept at making people feel at their ease.

m) He was an adept at getting people to talk confidentially to him.

이러한 예에서 우리는 adept가 명사로 쓰이든 형용사로 쓰이든 그 뒤에 at verb+ing형이 나온다는 관찰을 할 수 있다. 명사를 수식하는 말로는 an adept ball player, an adept guitar player, an adept craft artist에서 보듯 skillful의 의미가 강하게 나타남을 알 수 있을 것이다.
